President's Letter Careers

Dear Friends and Colleagues:

Nowadays book publishers are supposed to
be contrarians. My co-workers, friends and
family claim I fit the bill. So with that in
mind, I decided this year to turn to one of
the best known contrarians, Mark Twain,
for words of wisdom (possibly forgotten by
many) that are applicable to this
                                   publication, to the environmental industry,
and to the protection of the environment.
                                   For example:

Mark Twain said, “Those of you inclined to
worry have the widest selection in history.”

Case in point. The United States Supreme Court recently ruled that greenhouse gases are pollutants and ordered the EPA to determine if greenhouse gases should be regulated. Justice John Paul Stevens wrote for the majority, “In short, EPA has offered no reasoned explanation for its refusal to decide whether greenhouse gases cause or contribute to climate change.” Really? The EPA needed only to consult Mark Twain who over a hundred years ago wrote, “It is your human environment that makes climate.” He also stated, “Nature knows no indecencies, man invents them.” - “Architects cannot teach nature anything.” Enough said.

“The radical of one century is the conservative of the next. The radical invents the views. When he has worn them out, the conservative adopts them.” And so it goes. As the Bush administration’s stubborn refusal to accept climate change as a real threat barely softens, Mr. Twain’s views seem just as applicable today. “Perseverance is a principle that should be commendable in those who have judgment to govern it.”

But I digress… It is my tradition to use this space to thank you all for using the EnviroDirectory New England. Mr. Twain once exclaimed, “Many a small thing has been made large by the right kind of advertising.” He was right of course, and we encourage and thank you for using the products and services of the companies represented in this Directory. These firms want your business and are representative of the finest companies available anywhere, and of course they made this invaluable publication possible.

In 1897, Mark Twain wrote, “A successful book is not made of what is in it, but what is left out of it.” Touché!

See you!
